What is a video worth?

Heard of Rudyard Kipling?

Well Rudyard Kipling once said "words are of course the most powerful drug used by man."  Now if that's true, and a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a video worth?

We have 5 senses.  Sight, sound, smell, taste, touch.  These senses are independent of each other and can be idle or engaged at different levels of intensity.

Videos have both visual and audio information which complement each other and result in high levels of engagement and make knowledge retention much easier.  After several hours of viewing, the average human can retain 10% of texts 65% of images and 95% of videos.

In the internet age, the rise of broadband expands and the popularity of video and video sharing websites have amplified the effects and results of video engagement.

60 hours of video are uploaded on youtube every minute.  That's 10 years of video uploaded in 24 hours.

In the last few years there has been an explosion of video consumption and video content produced.  Youtube the leading website has over 4 billion views a day.  That's 3 billion hours of video.  Videos aren't just being watched.  They are being liked, shared, forwarded, commented on and interacted with.  68 percent of viewers share video links.  500 tweets every minute contain video links and more then 50% of the videos online have been rated or include comments from the community.  And that's not all.  Having a video on the landing page of your website makes 53 percent more likely to show up on the first page of a google search.  The average users visit to an average text and image based website lasts only 43 seconds.  The viewers of websites with video last 5 minutes and 50 seconds, that’s 88% more engagement.

Video and email marketing can increase click the rates by more than 90%.  Customers who watch video about products and service are 85% more likely to make a purchase. Making video promotions 6 times more effective then print and direct mail.  Today 37% of total internet usage is video streaming and by 2014 over 90% of internet traffic will be video.  Soon a new kind of internet will emerge, one without text.

So what is a video worth?  Art, Entertainment, Communication, Inspiration, Discovering, Revolution.

Why Video?

With proper optimization, video content increases the chance of front page of google results by 53 times.

63% of visitors watch video content before reading text on the same webpage.  Visitors continue navigating your website for an average extra 2 minutes after watching video content.  60 % of people share their experience.

1 in 2 Consumers Say That YouTube Videos Have Influenced A Purchase Decision!

While social media may not be a significant direct referrer of traffic to e-commerce websites, it does have an influence on product discovery and purchase decisions, according to a pair of studies.  YouTube videos have influenced a purchase at least once for 53% of respondents.  Surveys indicate that about 2 in 3 social media users trust the product and service recommendations they find on Facebook.

That’s a slightly higher percentage than trust blogs (63%), retail websites (63%), Pinterest (56%) and YouTube (51%), though it’s unclear whether or not those results are confined to users of each channel.

Reports have shown that engagement with brands on social media is rising, and the Walker Sands study indicates that 3 in 5 respondents engage with brands on social media, with almost all of those (55% overall) doing so on Facebook.  More claim to have engaged with brands on Twitter (21%) than on Pinterest (10%), a result which may reflect greater adoption of the former platform.

The study also demonstrates that the most common reason why consumers interact with brands on social media is for coupons and promotions (78%), ahead of discovering the latest news and products from brands (65%), receiving customer support (24%) and to see what others are buying (19%).  That’s not surprising given recent survey results indicating that for Facebook users, discounts and promotions are the most appealing brand posts.

About the Data: The Walker Sands’ 2014 Future of Retail study surveyed 1,046 consumers across the U.S. on their spending behaviours in the past year, and preferences for future spending.

Soon, all online advertising will be video.

Video advertising will double approximately every two years until all online ads will be video ads.  That’s right — all online ads will be video.

Xcite™ has predicted that the number of transistors on integrated circuits would double every two years, thereby exponentially increasing computing power.

Trust me, it does not take a genius to see the trends.  Xcite's™ prediction is firmly guided by data.  ComScore’s recently reported that Americans watched 11.3 billion video ads in December, setting a new peak, and a sharp 10% rise from November’s 10.3 billion.  December 2012 ad views were twice as many as in January 2012, representing 59% year-over-year growth.  Video ads accounted for 22.6% of all videos viewed in December, and 1.9% of time spent viewing video online.

Statistics Show that:
  1. Consumers love video!  They watch a lot of videos online.  Nielsen says Americans spent more than 360 billion minutes online in December 2012 and streamed 24.6 billion videos.
  2. Consumers watch video ads.  After 60 years of television, Xcite™ has learned to watch the ads to get to the content.  Yes, Xcite™ knows you want to get to your show, but often the ads are entertaining, visual and mercifully brief – and getting more interactive by the day.
  3. Advertisers like video ads because consumers watch them.  There has been a huge astronomical shift to online video by including video viewed on tablet and mobile devices.  This will provide advertisers the data they need to shift their spend to online video in even greater numbers.
  4. Consumers are buying lots of tablets.  The global market for tablet computers surged 78.4 percent last year.
  5. Tablets & smart phones make watching video easy in the bedroom, train, couch, park bench, and, ahem, bathroom.
  6. If consumers are buying on their tablets, guess where advertisers will want to run their ads?
  7. 4G will make watching video anywhere seamless.  Did someone say “conversation killer?”
  8. Banner ads do not work, but you already knew that.

Advertisers can’t ignore the numbers.

As advertisers are beginning to embrace tablet advertising, in virtually every case they want video in their ad units.  Consumers are watching those video ads hundreds of times more than they are clicking on banner ads.

While display and banner advertising were yesterday’s stepping stones for advertisers to enter the digital market, Xcite™ knows that video is where the real action is.
